Biography

I was born in Budapest, Hungary, and graduated cum laude from the prestigious Semmelweiss University.

After emigrating to the US, I settled down in New York City, where I graduated from the psychiatric residency training program of New York Medical College. Subsequent to that, I completed 2 fellowships at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, one in a standard Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry program, and another in a one-of-a kind program called "The Integration of Psychotherapy and Psychopharmacology".

After graduating from the fellowship programs, I embarked on a dual career involving both academic research and clinical psychiatry. In the research track I entered City University of New York where I studied in a PhD program in cognitive neuroscience, and was teaching undergraduates in the same field as well. For personal reasons, this track had to be abandoned after several years, but I have gained invaluable insight into brain science. The kind of psychiatry I strive to practice melds insights from neuroscience and from various schools of psychotherapy with medication treatment. My main area of expertise is psychopharmacology but what I do is not do "15 minute med checks".

In New York, I have worked both in private practice with populations typical to Midtown Manhattan and, later, Forest Hills, Queens, as well as with the most severely mentally ill in county and city mental health settings.

After moving to San Diego in 2003 , I have conducted a lively and varied practice encompassing county and specialty clinic settings, inpatient hospital rounds and emergency room calls, as a member of the medical staff of a large academic institution in San Diego, where I hold the title of Assistant Clinical Professor.

For the past 15+ years I have been involved in teaching psychiatric residents, first at training programs run by the State University of New York (Downstate), and then at the University of California, San Diego, where I also teach at the School of Medicine.

I am a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
