Biography

Dr. Amanda Kerns grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC) with a B.S. (Biological Sciences) in 2009. She earned her dental degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2014, where she served as a class officer for 4 years and was awarded multiple research grants, as well as being honored for Pre-doctoral Excellence in Pediatric Dentistry. She moved to Richmond, Virginia where she had the opportunity to advance her training with a 2 year residency training program in Pediatric Dentistry, in conjunction with a Master of Science in Dentistry degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Dentistry.

Research:
Throughout dental school, Dr. Amanda served as an advocate for improving access to oral healthcare during pregnancy in the state of North Carolina. She received both an Albert Schweitzer fellowship and an AAPHD grant to educate medical students at the UNC-Chapel Hill medical school on the importance of including oral health during their routine prenatal care, as well as creating a rotation at the UNC School of Dentistry where fourth year dental students had the opportunity to triage and treat pregnant patients. She presented this work at the AAPHD meeting in Huntsville, Alabama and published it in the Journal of Dental Education in 2015.
She completed her Masters thesis with a focus on the use of Motivational Interviewing as a technique to help reduce the incidence of new caries in a high caries risk dental population. She presented this work at the 2016 AAPD annual session in San Antonio, Texas entitled “Effects of Preventive Recall Strategy Following Full Mouth Dental Rehabilitation” and hopes that this project will help educate pediatric dental providers on applying risk-based strategies to help reduce the burden of early childhood caries.
