Jim Chialtas is a San Diego native, graduating from Serra High School in 1993. He went on to attend the University of California at Santa Cruz to achieve his Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology in 1997. There, he began his instruction in Quantum Ju-Jitsu, a martial art that encompasses Ju-Jitsu, Yoga and Restoration Massage Therapy training. After volunteering for a period of time at Quan Yin Healing Center in San Francisco, he decided to pursue a career in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Jim went on to attend Five Branches Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After three and a half years, and over 1500 hours of training, he received his Masters Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (MTCM).
As well as being licensed by the state of California in Acupuncture, Jim is certified in Restoration Massage Therapy – a unique form of massage which he incorporates into many of his treatments. Jim is also an apprentice instructor in Quantum Ju-Jitsu and Warrior Yoga.
Since beginning private practice Jim has trained extensively in Functional Blood Chemistry and Hormone analysis. This cutting edge way of looking at the body allows for a unique understanding and a melding of Eastern and Western methodologies. These diagnostic methods allow the patient to see first hand the progress of their therapy. Jim also works with a nutraceutical company and teaches other local practitioners how to work with Functional Blood Chemistry and Endocrinology related concepts.
When Jim isn’t seeing patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children, playing his banjo, and getting into nature as much as possible.

If I could do six starts, I would. I knew there was something up with my Thyroid. I read the book by Datis Kharrazian called "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms..." and realized I needed someone knowledgeable to get my thyroid situation figured out. Someone who thought outside of the box... and I didnt want to go to a doctor that was simply going to prescribe thyroid medication and send me on my way. After reading the Kharrazians book, I knew I had some thyroid disorder or some kind of thyroid issues and didn't know where to start or what to do. Datis Kharrazian book is great and informative and got to me wake up to my thyroid issue, but I needed someone who know this stuff well. After interviewing and shopping for someone in San Diego, I decided to go with Jim. He has studied and worked with Kharrazian and does workshops with him still. There were others in San Diego that said they have studied with Datis Kharrazian, but with Jim I didn't feel like he was in it for the money. I contacted Datis Kharrazian office to see if I could work with him, but his office only wanted special cases and crazy crazy money. Jim has turned my life around. He was on target with everything and the blood and salivia tests proved that he just was not blowing smoke. Everything he said made sense to everything that was going on with me and he set me up with a plan of action, answered my million questions patiently, and held my hand along the way. I see testing numbers changing. There is a lot of grief going through this process of learning hard health info that will be with me for the rest of my life, but I consider myself very lucky to have connected with Jim. I am 100% sincere.
A friend recommended Jim for acupuncture. I had thrown out my back and could barely walk. Jim's treatment got me immediately back on my feet. More importantly, I'm here to write about Jim as a Functional Medicine specialist. After having a heart attack at age 47 with no signs and supposedly in great health, the cardiologists to whom I was sent basically treated me like I was an 80 year old who weighed 300lbs. Their only focus seemed to be on lowering my already decent LDL. Since that wasn't the issue prior to my heart attack, why should that be the focus now? Through Jim's molecular biology background (and a lot of general smarts & common sense), we focused on some of the many other factors that might contribute to my condition. With his help, my inflammatory markers are down significantly and I have a much better understanding of what could have been the source of my issues and how I can address them. Without hesitation, I would recommend Jim, and not just for heart issues. He really understands the whole body what things affect it. It's your body and your life, this could be the best investment in yourself you'll ever make.
I have been consistently working with Jim Chaltis for my wellness over the past 5 years. I've known him an an acupuncturist for a long time but I sought out to explore his specialty, Functional Medicine. I generally only use Holistic and natural medicine for my health care so when my Naturopath diagnosed me with 9 uterine fibroids, but then went on to tell me that my blood hormone panel was "normal" it seemed inaccurate to me. I went to see Jim and when he looked over my hormone panel, and compared my blood tests to "functional levels" is was far from "normal". Over a years time as we worked together my fibroids shrunk and I could no longer feel them! Since then I've used Jim's work for Adrenal repair and function, periomenopausal issues, and food sensitivity testing and guidance. There is nothing quite like functional medicine for restoring health and Jim's approach is centered, practical, easy and well supported!
The owner, Jim, is as good as it gets! He's extremely knowledgeable in the field of acupuncture, is always learning new techniques and procedures through seminars and conventions, and has great hands and bedside manners. I'd never had acupuncture before when I first went to Jim. I was a little nervous and afraid it would be painful. Not only was it not painful, but I fell asleep with the needles in me! Then to my delightful surprise, he gave me about a 10-minute massage afterwards. A terrific experience. I've gone back again and again. And referred others who've gone back again and again.

It's been a year since I first saw Jim. To start with, my diet and exercise were both awesome, but I was still overweight at age 55 with metabolism slowing despite pretty substantial exercise. I was experiencing ever increasing weight gain and lack of energy. Jim suspected low thyroid, and even though we can't quite pin down where the thyroid is going wrong, the supplements he provided have made a big difference. More than that, he taught me that weight has more to do with blood sugar than with calories. He taught me how to tweak my exercise activity so it would be more effective at burning excess blood sugar, what to eat, and what to avoid. And more. And why. My doc just said I was obese and eat less. Jim gave me life-saving information. Over the past year I slowly lost about 25 pounds. I worked at it, yes, but before when I would eat less and exercise I got heavier. Now when I "diet" and exercise I lose weight. Western medicine is complicit in the calorie myth, This is great information and worth the money.

Jim is great! I switched from a lady that I was previously going to for acupuncture and found Jim to be more helpful. He was extremely knowledgeable and professional taking time to answer any questions that I had. I didn't go in with any major ailments except my upper back from being at a desk a majority of the day and minor hip problems. Jim was able to pinpoint areas that needed to be worked on and I always left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Highly recommend :)

Jim is AWESOME! I was trying to find someone who could help me with some mysterious issues I was having. I wasn't getting anywhere with my normal dr so I decided to give him a try. He was very easy to talk to, incredibly thorough and knowledgeable - an extremely personable guy! He really listened to me and gave me great advice. I'm feeling a lot better after getting some necessary tests and supplements. What I really appreciated was that I felt like a person and not a number. He was always there to answer my questions via email (and he is very fast at responding!) and I really appreciated that. I have 3 kids so it isn't easy to always make a phone call! I would totally recommend him to anyone I know who's interested in alternative care. I'm so thankful to have found him! His office is nice and clean, too!
